Il Curtiss P-40 Warhawk è un aereo da combattimento americano monomotore, monoposto, interamente in metallo e da attacco al suolo che ha volato per la prima volta nel 1938.
Il design del P-40 era una modifica del precedente Curtiss P-36 Hawk che ha ridotto tempo di sviluppo e ha consentito un rapido ingresso in produzione e servizio operativo.
Il Warhawk fu utilizzato dalla maggior parte delle potenze alleate durante la seconda guerra mondiale e rimase in servizio in prima linea fino alla fine della guerra.
È stato il terzo caccia americano più prodotto della seconda guerra mondiale, dopo il P-51 e il P-47; nel novembre 1944, quando la produzione del P-40 cessò, ne erano stati costruiti 13.738, tutti nei principali impianti di produzione della Curtiss-Wright Corporation a Buffalo, New York.
P-40 Warhawk era il nome che l'Aeronautica Militare degli Stati Uniti diede all'aereo e, dopo il giugno 1941, l'USAAF adottò il nome per tutti i modelli, rendendolo il nome ufficiale negli Stati Uniti per tutti i P-40.
Il Commonwealth britannico e le forze aeree sovietiche usarono il nome Tomahawk per modelli equivalenti all'originale P-40, P-40B e P-40C e il nome Kittyhawk per modelli equivalenti al P-40D e tutte le varianti successive.
