L'I-400 era un sottomarino giapponese la cui chiglia fu posata nel 1943, varato nel gennaio 1944 e commissionato alla Marina imperiale giapponese nel dicembre 1944. Al momento del varo, la nave era lunga 122 m, larga 12 m e il suo dislocamento in pescaggio era di 6.560 tonnellate. La velocità massima di superficie dell'I-400 era di 18,7 nodi in superficie. I-400 era uno dei più grandi sottomarini costruiti durante la seconda guerra mondiale ed era uno dei cosiddetti incrociatori sottomarini.
