Come in molti altri eserciti del periodo della seconda guerra mondiale, il ruolo delle officine da campo nell'esercito tedesco e la possibilità di rimettere in servizio veicoli danneggiati o rotti era notevole. A livello della divisione di fanteria nel 1939, questo ruolo è stato svolto dall'unità fornitura composta da 9 colonne di camion, un'azienda officina e un'azienda fornitrice motorizzata. Nella divisione corazzata (posta dal 1939), questo ruolo era svolto da un battaglione quartiermastro composto da 6 colonne di rifornimento leggero, due officine da campo e una compagnia di quartiermastro. A causa della grande varietà di macchinari (fuoristrada, camion, veicoli cingolati, ecc.)
