Il veicolo corazzato cingolato BTR-50 è stato sviluppato a cavallo tra gli anni Quaranta e Cinquanta ed è entrato in servizio con l'esercito sovietico nel 1954. La produzione in serie del veicolo avvenne negli anni 1954-1970. Il veicolo era alimentato da un unico motore diesel da 240 CV e impiegava fino a 20 truppe da sbarco! L'equipaggio era composto da due persone: il comandante e il meccanico-conducente. L'armamento principale della versione base era una singola mitragliatrice SGMB, calibro 7,62 mm. Il trasportatore BTR-50 è stato creato sulla base del serbatoio galleggiante PT-76, utilizzando molti dei suoi componenti. Tuttavia, si distingueva nettamente da esso per la mancanza di una torretta nella parte centrale della vettura, una parte anteriore dello scafo rialzata e un vano di trasporto aperto nella parte posteriore della vettura. Negli anni '60, il BTR-50 era uno dei trasporti corazzati di base delle brigate meccanizzate sovietiche. Nel corso della produzione in serie furono realizzate diverse varianti del BTR-50, differenziandosi principalmente per l'armamento principale, ma anche per l'utilizzo di un vano corazzato di atterraggio anche dall'alto (versioni: BTR-50 PK) e una sistematica riduzione nel numero di truppe da sbarco - fino a 8 soldati nel BTR-50 PUM -1 introdotto nel 1972. Il BTR-50 è stato esportato in molti paesi del Patto di Varsavia, inclusa la Polonia, dove è stato completamente modernizzato e ribattezzato OT-62 TOPAS.
